Fun drills that teach crossover timing to kids

Overview of crossover timing

A crossover is a dribble move where the ball is bounced from one hand to the other across the body to change direction and shake a defender. Timing matters: too early or too late can lose control or allow a defender to react. For reliable youth guidance, see official resources from USA Basketball and FIBA.

What you’ll need

  • Size-appropriate basketball (size 4 for younger kids, size 5 for older kids).
  • Two cones or markers to create a simple drill path.
  • Adult supervision and a flat, safe playing surface.

Drills to practice timing

Cone-to-cone crossover timing

Set two cones about 6–8 feet apart. Start at the first cone with the ball in your dominant hand. Dribble toward the second cone, and as you near it, perform a controlled crossover to switch the ball to your other hand, then push toward the second cone.

  • Keep knees bent, eyes up, and ball protected close to the body.
  • Use a soft touch; avoid slapping the ball or flipping it too high.
  • Repeat 60–90 seconds per hand, with 20 seconds rest between rounds.

Tempo walk with crossovers

Dribble slowly while walking. Use a clear tempo cue (count 1-2-3) and perform a quick crossover on the cue, then resume dribbling with the other hand.

  • Maintain a light stance and keep your head up.
  • Alternate hands to build ambidexterity.
  • Do 2 minutes total, resting as needed.

Quick-change crossover with pace changes

Move at a comfortable pace, then suddenly shift to a quicker dribble and execute a crossover to create space.

  • Vary pace to mimic defender reaction.
  • Focus on seeing target before crossing over.
  • Perform 4–6 cycles of slow-fast crossovers per set.

Tip: Having your head up during crossovers helps you read defenders and spot open teammates.

Safety and coaching tips

Always practice on a safe surface with proper footwear. For kids, keep drills short, fun, and age-appropriate. Hydrate, rest, and avoid overdoing drills to prevent overuse injuries.
